Granny Gear

During our UC lunch ride the other day, we got to talking about granny gears and what people name them. Out of respect, many of the riders name their granny gear after their grandma.

I guess that means my granny gear would be called "Juanita".

What is yours called?

Ruperta. My deceased maternal grandmother. No lie that was her middle name.

Merle.

My other grandmother was Alta, which is more like a big ring name than a granny gear name.

Donna Lou. Grandma Donna Lou is almost ninety and rides 5 miles a day on her stationary bike. She has had both knees replaced (one twice) and a hip replaced.

Granny LaBerta. She's small, pushes through when the going gets tough, and doesn't have many teeth. Just like my granny gear.

Oh, and those of you riding single speeds are disrespecting your grandmas.

Single speeds don't have granny gears, silly. I'll name my chainring Joseph in honor of my Grandpa. He's 92 years old and dead set on finishing his goal of riding both across the US both north/south and East West. He only has 360 north-bound miles in Montana left.

Kyle- I run a 32 ring. You run a 34. Therefore, i can call mine a granny gear. But I get what you are saying. If I used my grandpa's name, it would be Wilbert. That's kind of cool.

Black Hatch...cuz' if it's so steep that you need to be in Granny, then it's almost certain that you are in the prverbial very dark place.

Jenny, sounds like a good name for a granny gear. After rides like Butte and PCPP I know Jenny all too well!

Dolores. After my deceased maternal grandmother. Quite a fighter. Battled breast cancer but unfortunately she lost the fight. She was my hero when I was battling cancer (and she still is). Out of reverence for her, I try to use "Dolores" as little as possible. But I still carry her around on my crankset for good luck and to remind me.

Vivian - Small, spunky, tenacious. For the first time since 2002 I had to replace my Granny Gear this Spring. Apparently I don't use it that much.
