This Will Make You Slow Down

I'm almost done reading Saul's book about his crash, coma, and amazing recovery. Reading this book will make you want to slow down a bit. I think I'll buy a copy for Dug and Eric for Christmas.

When I saw Saul on the start line at the Porcupine Hill Climb last year, I didn't realize how much he had to ovecome to get there.

It's a very cool story.

Warning: If you like to go 55 MPH down Suncrest 4 days a week, I don't recommend you read this book. Now, every time I go past that guard rail on the North side of Suncrest and the cross winds start pushing my rims, I think about what it would be like to be feed through a tube.

Also....Is it me or did 9 out of 10 cyclists on Saturday have on the same yellow jacket? Did REI just have a blow out sale? I'm just saying....It was creepy.

I'll have to check out that book.

I've hit over 50 a few times on Suncrest, but last year I backed off. It just felt too close to the edge for me. Keeping it under 50 now, and usually under 45. I've been hit by those cross winds too - pushed me over half a lane once - spooky.

I have a yellow jacket I bought at REI two years ago. I guess I'm part of the problem. But I haven't worn it for over a week.

I might be in the mood for some Orem or CC dirt tomorrow - let me know.

can't bring myself to wear yellow.

Dug, I'm with you on the no yellow.

Anything over 45 creeps me out. I've always wondered how fast I top out on skis, though. Probably slower than I think. :(

Rick, when did you live in Michigan? I spent two winters there during grad school. I can't think of a reason to move back to the midwest.

It's not my favorite jacket, mostly because it's too loose and flaps like mad in the wind. And neon yellow is pretty dorky, but there have been some times on the road I felt better wearing it knowing even the most idiot drive had to be able to see me, even with dim light or other adverse conditions. I'd rather be dorky and alive - I guess having a wife and kids did that to me.

kris, i don't avoid yellow because it's dorky, i avoid yellow because i'm slow.

KK- I'm not making fun of the yellow jacket. I just thought it was odd how everyone had one on on Sat. I've never noticed it before. And Dug brings up a good point. I also avoid yellow because I am too slow.

Folks driving cars occasionally run broad side into trains. I have no faith in yellow.

5 years ago, I just woke up one morning, and said to myself, "I no longer enjoy riding my motorcycle. People scare the shit out of me while I'm riding it."

About 3 years ago I realized that going really fast off road scares me, and I've given it up.

Maybe this year going fast on the road will scare me.

And I'll have a really good reason for always going slow. "Anything above 15 mph scares me."

I'm still asleep / uninformed / or just plain mentally deficient - I don't get the yellow jacket = fast thing. Unless it's a connection with the yellow jersey of Tour de France fame. I always thought the fast guys wore anything but blaze yellow jackets. I associate dayglo wind breakers with plodding rec riders like myself. Educate and/or mock me at your discretion.

Botched: I'm not saying my yellow jacket is Kryptonite to the Super(bad) Drivers of Utah. It's simply that when my health or life are at stake I'll take anything that gives me even the slightest edge. Ya, road cycling is like gambling. I better stop this analysis right now before I reach the logical conclusion at the end of this line of reasoning and sell my road bike as my soul dies a little.

yes, i associate yellow with the tour. can't help it. i understand it's goofy. and yet there it is.

don't start with me on utah drivers. just don't.

Yellow is a difficult color for me to wear. It washes out my skin and makes me look pale.

As for slowing down, I try to but when your pushing 2 bills in weight its either let it ride or go buy more brake pads.
